Health of the Elderly Expressed as Cognitive Function


Abstract
As people¡¯s aging has been connected various health aspects physiologically and mentally, it is impossible to find exact tool for measuring it. However, someone¡¯s health status is obtained by free of disease and result of relevance of socioeconomic and psychiatric status, aging can be explained by the change of cognitive function. There are several tools to measure people¡¯s cognitive function like Mini Mental State Examination, Short Portable Mental State Questionnaire etc. In general, cut off age to show statistical difference might be 50 years old in cognitive aspect of aging. Among cognitive factors, attention and calculation, recall and visuo-constructional ability has decreased in earlier age than the other factors. There were gender differences of cognitive function. In the same aging group, male¡¯s cognitive score might be higher than female¡¯s. The older, the lower cognitive scores among the aged. There was some result that one fourth of the age of 60¡¯s, one half of the age of 70¡¯s and over three fourths of the age of over 80¡¯s had cognitive level of conclusive dementia in Korea. Moreover, cognitive function of the aged who had stable living conditions, were higher than that of free meal receivers. Cognitive function of the aged could be affected by educational period, physical activity, income, living fee and food consumption. The more severity of dementia and more lonely among the aged, the lower their cognitive function. Food consumption is said to have positive relationship with cognitive scores. Also, decreasing cognitive function can accelerate the vulnerability to some diseases including heart failure and stroke. Hypertension, hyperinsulinemia and weight loss of the aged could make the aged¡¯s cognitive function lower. Smoking and drinking could also lower the cognitive function of the aged.
